Wells Time Machine. He took one...It's like H.G. Wells Time Machine. He took one of the most exciting new inventions of his time, the subway, and projected it forward 1000s of years into a world where part of society evolved into a subterranean class of beings. This seems pretty absurd to us now as we know the subway, while important in it's way, is not the leading piece of technology around which society is ordered. Many other more important inventions has been introduced since then.
