Cannibalism?

Some may recall that the eateries and drinkeries around my workplace have all been going bust -- or at least bust-themed.

It has now become evident that this slippery slope goes down much further than previously imagined. Driving past Twin Peaks today at lunch time I noticed they had a big sign up reading, "Hot woman, cold beer. What else do you need?"

If that initial noun had been plural, we might have comforted ourselves by imagining that they were simply complimenting the appearance of their wait staff, but I think that with the singular noun we must conclude that the path from treating a woman like a piece of meat to serving her up as a piece of meat must be shorter than any of us had realized.

Tragic, isn't it. Drumstick, anyone?

My poor husband. We can't even drive past one of those places without me launching into a long speech that he's heard 1,000 times. And since there are a lot of those places popping up everywhere, he gets to hear it pretty much every time we drive anywhere.

When I was walking in France earlier this year, most of the walking was very rural. But after just over three weeks I arrived in one of the larger places, Moissac, a beautiful city. on the outskirts was a McDonald's sign, proclaiming in French that McD's was 'everything that I love'. The best thing about walking so far in rural areas is that for evermore, you know that such ads are just a load of complete nonsense.

That corner is terrible! Twin Peaks, Tilted Kilt, "joy club", Hooters, and the new Third Base is suspiciously named too...

Maybe the use of the singular noun indicates that the writer of the advertisement is employing a symbolic and emblematic meaning of "Woman." Such that it refers not to any individual adult female, but to the essence of all that is feminine (and hot).

Hmmm. I'd assumed that Third Base was just a sports bar -- and since I don't watch sports I hadn't thought about it. But now that you mention it...

At least it's not called "Sliding Home" or "Score!"
