Some people's transgressions are more visible to the onlooker, other people's offenses agaisnt God aren't visible from the outside. But even saints struggle with darkness, fall to temptations, experience that their love is not strong enough. Each of us lives the circle of sin-and-repentance (or I should rather say it's an upward spiral, not a circle), and so long as one continunes this journey, it is enough for God and the angels in Heaven to rejoice. The excitement is provided by the various adventures Felix has as he travels through Spain, but throughout, he has conversations with God as you would with a friend. They are middle grade, I'd say, but I loved them when I encountered them as an adult. The religious characters, priests, monks, and nuns, are a mixed bag, but there are many sympathetic ones, and as the books are set in 1800's Spain, are pretty true to life in that respect.
