Sure, Patrick personally lived an ascetic and austere life, but lots of saints did that and we still celebrate their days with feasting, not fasting. And no, he didn't go around saying, "I am so great that my holiday should be a day of great feasting!" But I don't think most saints did that either. If there is some record of him as a bishop being a hardass to the laity and insisting that they fast even during customary feast days, then maybe you have a point, but I don't know of anything like that.<br /><br />But I should disclose a personal interest in Saint's Day dispensations from the austerities of Lent: today, Saint Joseph's Day, is my wedding anniversary.Billy Jacknoreply@blogger.com
