Say this for the Minor Prophets: They know how to break a losing streak.
After going 0-6 the past two years at the seminary tournament in Columbus, the Minor Prophets of Mount St. Mary's in Mount Washington shocked second-seeded Kenrick Seminary of St. Louis in the opening game by going 5-for-5 from 3-point range, all by different players.
"You know what the odds of that are?" asked coach Kevin Kahmann, who had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists (and no threes) in the Prophets' 53-44 opening game victory.
The odds are astronomical.
The Prophets knew they were in 1 Samuel 17:49 range ("And David put his hand in the bag and took out a stone and flung it...") when former high school soccer player Ryan Ruiz drained a trey.
Another 3 was by Dan Hess, a Notre Dame Law School graduate, who was a monster in the Friday night opener (15 points on 7-of-9 from the field with eight boards and three assists). The other three treys were by Tim Ralston, sixth man Matt Robben (three assists) and point guard Will Egan, a steady presence throughout the Prophets' three-game stay (1-2) in the tournament at the Pontifical College Josephinum.
Egan, of the West Side, had no turnovers, seven assists and 23 points for the tournament that was won by the Josephinum College team, which beat the Prophets by only four points (55-51) in Game Two. Last year, the Prophets lost to the eventual tournament winner by 40 points.
