Humility

So last Sunday we heard:
He told a parable to those who had been invited,
noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
do not recline at table in the place of honor.
A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,
‘Give your place to this man,’
and then you would proceed with embarrassment
to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited,
go and take the lowest place
so that when the host comes to you he may say,
‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’
Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
I suppose another observation that might be made about humility is that if you're a young woman wearing a t-shirt which proclaims "Everything is BIGGER in Texas!" across your bosom, the guy standing in line behind you to buy his lunch may notice that the shirt is not looking all that filled out in the chest region.

This example clearly didn't make it into the parable for two reasons:
  1. Christ didn't live in Texas
  2. He was too much of a gentleman to note such things

However, not everyone is Christ...

3. They didn't have novelty t-shirts in the time of Christ.

Actually, I never read this parable before (the one above). Is it in the bible? It sounds like something from the Moslem or Jewish religion.

The blockquote-ed section is Luke 14:7-14 (with a bit of the end trimmed off). It was our Gospel reading for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

The Texas t-shirt part is modern as Histor discerns...
