Culture Clash

It was as the priest was incensing the altar (after the presentation of the gifts and before moving into the main text of the Eucharistic rite) and the choir was giving its all to a rendition of Flow River Flow that it occured to me: One of these things does not belong with the other.

Must've been the incense. I can't tell you the last time incense was used in our parish!!

ha!
I utterly detest that song.
or most songs referring to "rivers."

and I actually *like* praise and worship music... but not in Mass!

Hey, at least you got incense! We only get the bad music. (And the eucharist, of course, but that's all that keeps us coming back!)

Some of us have our incense accompanied by Missa Jubilate Deo. Just saying.

A few months ago, we had a visiting foreign priest. His English was very accented and hard to understand. He got to the very familiar Eucharistic chant melody and it was beautiful because of his thick accent and the universality of the melody. It was a moment of realization of the nature of our Church. And then he was interrupted by the clangy clang of 70s hippy guitars. One of these things is not like the other...

I long for the day when the church returns to the sanity of gregorian chant. But even more I long for the return of communion kneeling down and on the tongue. When asked what is the most horrible thing she ever saw Mother Teresa responded "Communion in the hand." Pope John Paul II also wrote that because of communion in the hand there are now many abuses to Our Lord
