In Praise of Amateurs

Rick Lugari, who does more inventive blogging while on hiatus than some of us do when we're trying (who else would have come up with the idea of campaigning for second to the last place in the Catholic Blog Awards by using pin-ups, puppy pictures and animated line drawings?) has struck again with the Amateur Catholic B-Team.

All of us who came into the world of Catholic blogging only to realize that there's only one Mark Shea and one Amy Welborn pretty much knows how the stray goldfish in the whale tank at the zoo feels. But Rick is out there for the little guy. All the little guys and girls and fuzzy green creatures from Alpha Centauri who write great Catholic blogs with readerships of six regulars and one person who somehow managed to end up there after typing "crazy horse bubble gum altar boy adventure hardy boys flagship traditionalist incense flan" into Google can now band together under the friendly blue banner of the B-Team of the Catholic blogging world.

That's us, the bench warmers. The 6'2" brainiacs brought onto the basketball team to keep the GPA up who never get to play. The quiet backwaters of the blogsphere whose hitcounts suddenly surge to unheard of heights of 300 visits when a link comes down from one of the Professional Catholics.

Now... We're still bench warmers and backwaters. But we have a cool logo that they can't use. And that makes all the difference. Right?

No no no...

Don't go laying this whole thing on my shoulders. Tom, Mo, Julie, and Jay deserve the blame as much as I do!

I think it was Julie's idea originally. Or was it Maureen's? You know a REALLY good idea MUST have come from a woman. Rick's just the technical support. Tom had some cool cat pictures. And I'm along for the ride.

I can certainly believe that Tom's cats took most of the blame.

However, I just enjoyed the chance to come up with a google search string that involves flan. Because as William H. Macy has told us all: Two thing I know to be true. There is no difference between good flan and bad flan and there is no war and Albania.

Oh no, don't go blaming this on me! Not that I didn't fan the flames ... :-D

Hmmmm. Speaking of fanning flames, it kept striking me during the Catholic Blog Awards: Hey, there are some interesting things one could do with designing a different structure for this webapp...

Though really, I'm not sure it would be properly in the spirit of amateurism to do our own awards contest.

Then it must have been Mo.

What, are we letting Larry and Curly off?
