After hearing the umpteenth rendition of "The Circle of Life", which the girls memorized in about two viewings of The Lion King, we decided it was time to start channelling their mental activity into something a bit more productive. We've begun selecting a short poem a week for each girl to work on. Then on Sunday evening we have a formal recitation for Daddy.
You can read about some of the poetry books we consulted and see our selections over at the Humanities Program blog.

My children all have poetry scrapbooks. I would write out the poem they had memorized on one page (until they were old enough to do it themselves) and they would illustrate the poem on the facing page. They go back and look at these and laugh over some of the poems they loved and moan over the ones they didn't! It is fun to look through and see their progression.
A blessed day to you all...
When our children were small we would read them poetry. I am not sure they are that interested in it any more now that they are grown. We were hoping that reading poetry to them would teach them ho to memorize things better. One in college, so it might have worked on him.
